<h2>Meet Matt Rinker</h2>Matt has dedicated his life in service of others. Matt was born into a middle class family in Virginia. His parents aren't famous, they are just like your parents - humble and hardworking. Matt's father, Roger, was a welder in the Steamfitters Union who later went into the car business. Matt's mother, Judi, went back to college after her kids were born to become an elementary school teacher.Starting at a young age, Matt has chosen to serve. From being elected to numerous student leadership positions to working in his neighborhood as an adult, Matt has led a life of service.Once graduating college, Matt moved to Atlanta in 2004 and has lived throughout the City - from Buckhead to East Atlanta, Midtown to Grant Park.For the past four years, Matt has been active in the Peoplestown Neighborhood Association - serving as Vice President and, currently, as President of the organization. Matt is also involved with NPU V, advocating for smart development and preserving our neighborhood's past.During Matt's time representing the Peoplestown community, he has fought against redistricting of students out of the Maynard Jackson cluster by the Atlanta Public Schools, led campaigns to slow the construction of Atlanta Watershed's Custer Avenue Stormwater/Sewage Vault, and opposed development of an apartment community by a negligent landlord.In 2022, Matt was appointed by Mayor Andre Dickens to the Mayor's LGBTQ Advisory Board, where he advised the Mayor and his team on policies affecting the city.Professionally, Matt works in the Real Estate industry as a Regional Director and is a licensed Realtor. He is a member of the Atlanta Apartment Association and Atlanta Realtors Association. He has worked on projects from East Atlanta to West Midtown, Chastain to Capitol View and everywhere in between and beyond.In his free time, Matt is active in recreational sports leagues including softball, kickball, and bowling. Matt is a former Board member of the Hotlanta Softball League and is a member of the Hall of Fame for that organization.Matt lives in Peoplestown with his two dogs, Hank and Harper.

Matt Rinker Announces Candidacy for Atlanta City Council Post 1 At-Large

Homeownership is sinking to lower and lower levels - but the desire of being a homeowner hasn't. The simple fact is that too many homes in Atlanta are owned by large investment companies. Matt will propose legislation to limit how many homes may be purchased by investment companies.

Corporations should not own the bulk of Atlanta's homes. Changing the rules for business licenses for multi-family and single family housing rentals to require LOCAL management and limit the number of single family homes one entity may own.

Housing: Limit Investment Company Ownerships

Adding more bike lanes throughout the city should be a priority - especially as we see development increase. Dedicated, safe bike lanes will provide alternative transportation methods. Additionally, fines for vehicles parking or stopping in a bike lane should be increased and those revenues should go directly back to funding more bike lane improvement projects.

Safer transportation options including bike lanes. This includes more protected bike lanes and fining vehicles that are stopped or parked blocking a dedicated bike lane.

For years, Atlanta has been slowed down by the poor decisions of our elected leaders. Matt believes in the FULL promise of the Atlanta Beltline - which from it's inception included rail to connect our neighborhoods. This is a vital tool in helping reducing commute times around the city.

It's simple, to get people moving throughout Atlanta, we simply can't rely on an interstate which divides our city. Rail on the Beltline is a strategic investment which will help move people from Adair Park to Ansley, from Piedmont Park to Pittsburgh.

Too often, walking through the streets of Atlanta requires you to literally walk in the streets. Our sidewalks should be connected and open. Increasing fees for closing sidewalks need to be increased. Strictly enforce keeping sidewalks clear of vehicles.Additionally, the burden of sidewalk maintenance can't fall solely on the property owner - the city must invest in making our sidewalks complete and abled to be travelled.

Transparency in our government is the foundation of our city's success. Officials found in violation of the City's Code of Ethics should face a penalty more than just a slap on the hand. Increasing minimum fines for failing to submit financial disclosures is a good start. Many of our elected officials fail to properly report their financial contributions. This allows for corruption.

Our leaders should be the epitome of ethics - not skirting the rules. From not filing campaign reports to more serious violations, slap on the wrist fines are not stopping the problem. Increasing fines for ethic violations will help.

Transparency: Increase Ethics Penalties

Corruption and cronyism has plagued our city for too long. We need an independent Inspector General while making sure that city employees have rights throughout the investigation process.The watchdog agency should have the power to expose inefficiencies in our government and also refer criminal or ethical lapses of our city employees or officials to the proper authority.

Transparency: Strengthen Inspector General Office

Public safety is as much about solving crimes as preventing them. It is also about our police force building relationships with the communities they serve. Matt believes the best way for an officer to have compassion for the citizens they serve is to live among them. Matt will introduce incentives for officers to live in the zone that they are assigned.

Provide housing subsidies for APD officers to live in the zones they patrol. This will increase visibility and build stronger relationships with the community.

Safety: Cops In Communities

Our brave members of the Atlanta Police Department are doing more with less. We need to expand our options for alternative policing solutions. Expand racial and cultural sensitivity trainings and train our officers how to spot mental health crisis situations.
